Erotic poetry

I wanna make love to you, hold in my arms;
sweep you off your feet and bewitch you with my charms.
I wanna stare in the depths of your eyes, slide my fingers through your hair;
in my arms, you would find solace, trust me, oh maiden fair!
I wanna kiss your lips and suck on your bosoms,
thrust inside you rhythmically while grabbing your bottoms.
I wanna bite on your bums, lick your thighs,
as I get aroused by your moaning and sighs.
Together we would make love, and in sync, we would cum;
finally, we would doze off in each other's arms, all sore and numb!

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy is a type of depth psychology known also as insight-oriented therapy. It zeroes on unconscious processes that are manifested in a person’s persona and behavior. The main motive of this therapy is to obtain the unconscious content from the psyche of a client to alleviate psychic tensions. More than other forms of depth psychology it depends on the interpersonal relationship between therapists and clients. In short, this approach enables the client to understand unresolved symptoms and conflicts that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and how these may manifest in the form of need and desire to abuse substances. This form of therapy lets the therapist work with ease on clients with weekly or bi-weekly sessions.

Baahubali: The Conclusion

The ending of “Baahubali: The Beginning” left us on the edge of our seats. It was a masterstroke by the magician S.S. Rajamouli to let the viewers crave more. The following plot has been sketched upon the brilliant first part.

Let us start with the final scene of “Baahubali: The Beginning”. Kattappa confesses at the end that it was he who killed Amarendra Baahubali. Thus, it automatically sets up beautifully for the second part to reveal the secrets.

Of course, the story will start with Kattappa explaining the reasons behind the murder of Amarendra Baahubali. Analyzing the character of Kattappa one can find a resemblance of Bhisma from Mahabharata. Though in his heart, he longs for the righteous side, he still clings to the throne of Mahismati. Like Bhisma, he lived in the past, honoring the ritualistic slavery which his ancestors set themselves up to. Thus, it can be safely assumed that he stabbed Amarendra Baahubali on the instructions of the Mahismati ruler.

At the end of the war with the Kalakeya tribe, Amarendra Baahubali was announced king by the reagent Sivagami. Kattappa portrayed as a servant to the throne was not supposed to harm Amarendra Baahubali as he was ascending the throne. That clarifies that Amarendra Baahubali was not the ruler of Mahismati when he was killed.

Sivagami was the pivotal character in the first part. She saves Amarendra’s infant son, Mahendra Baahubali(Sivu). She pleads to God to save Sivu’s life in exchange for her. Also, she states that by saving Sivu she was trying to repent for her sins. That indicates that she was a conspirator in the killing of Amarendra Baahubali. It is hard to relate her to the backstabbing of Amarendra Baahubali, as she was portrayed as just and wise in the first part. To find why she betrayed Amarendra, one has to fathom her priorities. As per the first part, she lives for the Mahismati Kingdom and its people. So the only reason she will betray Amarendra Baahubali would be to serve her citizens.
At the beginning of the first part, a map was shown containing Mahismati Kingdom, Kunthala Kingdom, Singapuram Bandit’s fort, and Kunthala’s Hideout.

Avanthika (Mahendra Baahubali‘s love interest) and her group that tries to rescue Devasena (Mahendra Baahubali‘s mother), seemed to belong to the Kunthala Kingdom. In fact, Devasena is proclaimed as the Princess of Kunthala.

The first part shows that the two cousins (Amarendra Baahubali and Bhallala Deva) also compete for Devasena apart from the Mahismati throne. It indicates that Devasena chose Amarendra Baahubali over Bhallala Deva which had resulted in getting her imprisoned after Amarendra’s Death.

Bhallala Deva was shown as a passive-aggressive character while dealing with Amarendra Baahubali. Though he comes out as equal in competitions, still he seems to be hesitant to assert himself directly in front of Amarendra. Most probably he ordered Kattappa to backstab Amarendra. The only reason Kattappa would follow Bhallala Deva’s order is if he rules Mahismati. So it can be assumed that by the time Amarendra was assassinated, Bhallala Deva was the ruler of Mahismati.

Amarendra Baahubali might have chosen Devasena between the throne of Mahismati and her. In fact, his son Mahendra Baahubali is also portrayed as a reckless lover. It seems to be a scenario of “like father, like son."
The first part hints that both Kunthala kingdom and Singapuram Bandit’s fort have been destroyed by their absence in the movie. Amarendra Baahubali is shown to be killed during a battle. Most probably this is the battle between the Bandits and the Kunthala Kingdom.

Devasena chooses Amarendra Baahubali over Bhallala Deva in the Swayamvara. The Kunthala king puts a condition for the marriage, Amarendra Baahubali has to accept the position of Crowned Prince (Yuvraaja) of the King of Kunthala kingdom (as he has no male heir). That means Amarendra Baahubali has to vacate the Mahismati throne.

Amarendra Baahubali agrees to the proposal angering Sivagami. Sivagami resists the proposal and states that it is not justified for a king to leave his kingdom and people to pursue his own self-centered love. Amarendra justifies it when by thinking naively, that in a way Mahismati will be more powerful as he will now have the forces of the Kunthala kingdom at his disposal. He states that no enemy like Kalakaye would dare to attack them in case both the kingdoms can come to the battle together. He sees the possibility of such strong ties between the two kingdoms if Bhalla Deva rules Mahismati and he rules the Kunthala kingdom.

Bijjala Deva supports Amaredra Baahubali’s statements knowing that it will pave the way for his son Bhalla Deva to rule the Mahismati kingdom. Amarendra Baahubali was always oblivious of Bhalla Deva’s treacherous schemes. Sivagami puts a condition that out of the sons of Amarendra Baahubali and Bhalla Deva (among all of her grandsons), the most deserved one would rule a combined kingdom with its capital at Mahismati. Everyone has to agree with her condition to receive immediate benefits. However, not everyone was happy thinking about the long-term consequences of Sivagami’s condition.
The Kunthala king thought that his kingdom would dominate the regions by the inclusion of a mighty warrior like Amarendra Baahubali. The Kunthala king asks him to take the universal pledge of loyalty to the Kunthala kingdom prior to marriage. Amrendra Baahubali accepts the crown of Yuvraaja and vows to protect the Kunthala kingdom from all possible enemies. He gets wed to Princess Devasena.
Bhallala Deva ascends to the Mahismati throne. He is still jealous of Amarendra Baahubali for winning Devsena. He and his father Bijjaladeva plots against the Kunthala kingdom. They instigate the bandits to attack the Kunthala kingdom. The Kunthala king tries diplomacy and paying tributes to the bandits. Meanwhile, Amarendra Baahubali uses that time to train the Kunthala soldiers. He plans to attack their fort and banish them for good.
Sivagami gets concerned about Amarendra Baahubali‘s actions. Mahismati kingdom has always supported the bandits through the back door. It helps them to balance the regional powers and portray their superiority to the neighbors. Sivagami knows that with the fall of the bandits and with Amarendra Baahubali at the helm, soon Kunthala kingdom will dominate the neighborhood.
Sivagami gets into a fix on how to tackle this new circumstance. Bijjaladeva and Bhallala Deva suggest that they should attack the Kunthala kingdom in support of their bandit allies. Sivagami asks Kattappa for his thoughts. Kattappa says candidly that another major war with the Kunthala kingdom will be catastrophic for the Mahismati kingdom in terms of both military and economy. All of them agree that outright war is not possible.
Bijjaladeva chalks out a plan to tackle the situation. His plan will enable the triumph of the Mahismati kingdom. According to his plan, Mahismati will support both sides. Mahismati will support the bandits like they always do through the back door. They agree to send a small troop proactively in Kattappa’s lead to help the Kunthala kingdom. To ensure Mahismati’s superiority Bijjaladeva proposes that during the battle, Kattappa should assassinate Amarendra Baahubali. His logic was that after the fall of the Kunthala kingdom, Mahismati will easily dominate the regions. Sivagami with tears in her eye accepts the proposal. She now prays for Amarendra Baahubali’s son to be worthy enough so that he can rule the combined kingdoms.
Kattappa protests, but he was overruled by Bhallala Deva. As the king of the Mahismati kingdom, he orders Kattappa to kill Amarendra Baahubali. Kattappa goes to the Kunthala kingdom with a small band of soldiers. As he reached there he gets the news that Mahendra Baahubali (Sivu) is born. He knows as per Sivagami’s words; Sivu might one day rule the Mahismati kingdom and hence as per his family traditions; Kattappa places the infant Sivu’s feet on his bald head.
In the heat of the battle, Kattappa eventually kills Amarendra Baahubali by stabbing him in the back. The Singapuram Bandit’s fort has been sacked, and they vanquished. By the time Kattappa re-enters Kunthala kingdom, he sees the Mahismati flag flying. While the Kunthala army was busy fighting the bandits, Bhallala Deva attacks and capture the Kunthala kingdom without any resistance. Once he receives the confirmation of the killing from Kattappa, Bhallala Deva announces the death of Amarendra Baahubali.

As the entire Kunthala kingdom mourns for Amarendra Baahubali, Bhallala Deva orders Devasena to be prepared for marriage. He kills the Kunthala king when he protests against this atrocity. When Devsena refuses, Bhallala Deva orders her to be locked up. The entire Kunthala kingdom rebels against Bhallala Deva’s orders. Brutal Bhallala Deva gets the whole kingdom razed to the soil. Most of the rebel population gets killed or arrested. The arrested people were taken along with Devasena to Mahismati to be whipped and enslaved (shown in the 1st part of the movie). Some remaining soldiers and residents flee to the Kunthala hideout near the huge waterfall. They take an oath to get their princess Devasena freed from the clutches of the tyrant Bhallala Deva.
Sivagami is shattered by the way Bhallala Deva treats the people. She asks him to fix his ways. Bhallala Deva tells her as he is King now, he no longer needs to heed to her. Sivagami at once realizes her mistakes. Bijjaladeva supports his son. He does not want history to be repeated. He instigates Bhallala Deva to kill Shivu, the infant son of Devasena and Amarendra Baahubali. Sivagami overhears their conversation. She takes the oath to save Shivu. Kattappa suffering from the guilt (of killing Amarendra Baahubali) wanted to join her. She dissuades Kattappa. She asks him to do his duty and look after Devasena. She, however, asks him to assist Shivu if he ever tries to take vengeance. Kattappa promises to aid Shivu to gain the throne of Mahismati. Bhallala Deva sends soldiers to kill Sivu. Sivagam flees through the secret tunnel along with Sivu. She was hit by an arrow while escaping.
Once Kattappa has explained the reason for the killing of Amarendra Baahubali, Mahendra Baahubali announces that he will end the tyranny of Bhallala Deva. Mahendra Baahubali with Kattappa and Sardar (leader) of the rebels debate and try to sketch out a plan to defeat Bhallala Deva.

To defeat the forces of Bhallala Deva, the rebels will require a lot of weapons. The rebels and soldiers loyal to Kattappa will form the bulk of the forces. The weapons will be acquired from Aslam Khan, Kattappa’s friend.
After realizing that Kattappa has switched sides. Bhallala Deva starts to distrust his own soldiers. He strikes a deal with the Kalakaye tribe. The Kalkaye tribe had already accepted his suzerainty as their previous ruler was killed by him. This is the traditional way to get crowned among the Kalkaye tribe. As an incentive, he also offers them the region of the Kunthala kingdom to pulverize if they fight on behalf of him. His actions further antagonize the loyal forces of Mahismati and the populace. Once they hear about Mahendra Baahubali (the son of Amarendra Baahubali) they flock in masses to Mahendra’s camp.
The final battle lines have been drawn. The majority of Mahismati soldiers are in Mahendra’s camp. The numerical supremacy of Bhallala Deva’s camp is clearly visible with the Kalakaye tribe joining him. He has their natural respect as he had killed their best warrior and ruler (Kalakaye). The epic battle has started. Bhallala Deva and Mahendra Baahubali approach each other. One wants to avenge his son, another his father.

Mahendra Baahubali jumps over the blades of Bhallala Deva’s chariot and topples Bhallala Deva from the chariot. Bhallala Deva extends and swings his mace. Mahendra Baahubali dodges the mace and cuts the chain with his sword. Bhallala Deva jumps and punches Mahendra Baahubali. Mahendra Baahubali loses his sword. Both fight each other now with their bare hands. Bhallala Deva has the upper hand initially due to his might. He, however, lost his edge to Mahendra Baahubali’s energy and swiftness (due to his youth). Mahendra Baahubali finally kills Bhallala Deva by beheading him with his sword. The scene is similar to the scene of Amarendra Baahubali trying to behead the Kalakaye king. Only this time the Baahubali manages to finish his job. The Kalakaye tribe once again runs away from the battlefield.
Mahendra Baahubali enters the Mahismati kingdom with his soldiers. He notices that Bijjaladeva is waiting along with the Mahismati crown. He seems to be happy. Bijjaladeva calls Mahendra Baahubali his grandson and moves forward to hug him. Kattappa smells foul. Kattappa warns Mahendra Baahubali against the treacherous Bijjaladeva. He moves parallel to Mahendra Baahubali. Bijjaladeva hugs Mahendra Baahubali. He takes the dagger out of the crown to stab Mahendra Baahubali in the back. Kattappa chops his hand with a quick movement of his sword. With the next blow, he presses his entire sword into Bijjaladeva’s abdomen. Bijjaladeva dies on the spot.
Mahendra Baahubali frees Devasena. He asks her to look over the state as Raajmataa. She fills the throne of Sivagami. Mahendra Baahubali ascends to the throne of the Mahismati kingdom. The entire kingdom celebrates his ascension to the throne.
Mahendra Baahubali marries Avantika. His courtiers urge him to turn the golden statue of Bhallala Deva into his image. He melts the golden statue to return the gold to the citizens. He rebuilds the Kunthala kingdom to settle the rebels and prisoners (enslaved Kunthala people). He makes Sivagami’s dream true by ruling both the kingdoms with Mahismati as the capital. Kattappa informs him that the Kalakaye tribe has accepted his suzerainty. He asks Mahendra Baahubali to contemplate performing the Ashvamedha yagna. Mahendra Baahubali replies that he already had his share of war and glory. He values peace, stability, and prosperity higher than the formation of an empire.

Entrepreneurs At The Bottom Of The Pyramid And Microfinance

Entrepreneurs At The Bottom Of The Pyramid
Source: Flickr

The word “entrepreneurship” is generally associated with entrepreneurs; people who organize and manage enterprises, usually with considerable initiatives and risks.

The societal pyramid classifies people as per their financial status. Its bottom comprises the poorest people, while the middle class (in sync, with its name) is placed in the middle, and the privileged are on the top. It is comparatively easy for people in the upper portion of the pyramid, who already are affluent, to take the entrepreneurial plunge. Moreover, they also have financial institutions and useful contacts, which makes the path much easier to walk. The sole point in favor of the poor is that akin to an actual pyramid, the social pyramid also has most of its mass (population) at the bottom. For entrepreneurs, belong to the bottom class, it is easier for them to relate and connect with people, the engine of any business. As entrepreneurs originating from the same background, they are usually better molded to deal with their workers and in some cases, even consumers.

Entrepreneurship: Reasons

The reasons for entrepreneurship for different classes vary in sync with their circumstances. For the rich, it’s a way to strike out from their peers and background; a way to express their ideas, talents, and creativity. Furthermore, some of them even venture into entrepreneurship for the kick only.

The middle class normally looks for white color jobs, but some misfits do try to break the shackles. They get out of their monotonous lives and take the plunge.

The poor are left with limited choices. They have no option but to live the destitute lives of their previous generations. Starting from their childhood, they have to dwell in poverty for their entire lives. Aching from that lingering and inescapable pain, a lot of them wish to write a different script for their children. Mostly without resources or coveted qualifications, living in the perennial fear of starvation, entrepreneurship is not only the only way for them to survive but sometimes even a compulsion.

A Familiar Story

It is a familiar story for most entrepreneurs, belonging to the poor class. They start early, sometimes even before they have reached their teens, to earn their bread by working for someone else. They gradually pick up the tricks of the trade. They also consciously or unconsciously hone their interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills help them to create a much-needed contact network. Thus, armed with the requisite skills, they take the Herculean task of changing their lives.

The Only Way

Entrepreneurship is the only way for these aspiring poor. While growing up, most of their parents couldn’t afford a good education. As a result, they mostly turn into semi-skilled laborers. The most harmful part is that many among them get automatically molded to the miserable lifestyle of their previous generations. Only a few of them are smart enough to understand that the small wages they earn would not suffice (both for their children and themselves). Only a handful of imaginative yet practical minds among them realize that in order to survive the ordeal they have to think out of the box.

Clutches of Loan Sharks

The way to secure a loan for entrepreneurs, belonging to the bottom class, used to be tricky. Previously, they mainly use to knock on the door of local moneylenders. These moneylenders, actually loan sharks in disguise, were their only hope to raise a starting capital. These loan sharks used to charge unbelievably high-interest rates, carving away the profit margin of these poor entrepreneurs. Moreover, these lenders sometimes used to arm-twist poor entrepreneurs into terms tilted in favor of the formers. Also, there was the ever-present issue of deliberate account manipulation to further cheat the compelled entrepreneurs.

Microfinance: A New Lifeline

These aspiring poor now have a new lifeline in the form of microfinance. According to a recently published report, in India, there are around 5.8 crore unique users aided by micro-financial institutions. Moreover, the micro-finance loan portfolio has swelled to Rs 2,59,377 crores as of March-end, this year.

Challenges with Microfinance

Bad debts

One of the major challenges with microfinance is bad debts. The primary reason for bad debts is that poor people can afford few (or none) assets in the form of collateral securities. Microfinance institutions tend to focus on increasing the customer base. This automatically creates the payment recovery problem. To curb bad debts, the institutions should intensify their attention to analyze their potential clients and their repayment capacity.

Defaulter problem

The defaulter problem starts with poor identification and risk analysis on the part of microfinance organizations. Another major factor is the entrepreneur’s (here the aspiring poor's) entrepreneurial capabilities. If their entrepreneurial skill-set is not up to the mark then the chances are that it will cast trouble for both them and the lender(s). Due to their poor upbringing and the discouraging environment, they more often suffer from a lack of self-esteem, belief, and confidence. They also lack the education and experience to succeed in their endeavors.

High-interest rates

The major hurdle in the way of entrepreneurs working by borrowing capital from microfinance institutions is the high-interest rates. These interest rates range from 30% to 100% per annum. The institutions urge that the high-interest rates are on the grounds of transaction costs and sustenance.

Management problem

The basic management problem with microfinance is the expense of managing consumer accounts, which usually generates negligible revenue. The process becomes unsustainable if the revenue generated per account is lesser than the cost incurred by the organization.

Marketing problem

The marketing problem with microfinance is that it is based on myths and fantasies. It doesn’t show the actual picture that; in reality, it is only marginally improving the lives of aspiring poor (the entrepreneurs at the bottom of the pyramid). People donating to these organizations automatically assume that their aid would metamorphose the lives of the poor, whereas reality paints a different and picture.

Scalability problem

Most microfinance institutions support people who are already involved in an enterprise. The rest of the aspiring entrepreneurs face the challenge of generating ideas, which are buyable by these institutions.

Due to the lack of education and budget, the ventures started by such entrepreneurs generally consist of no or low technologies. They certainly can’t compete with industries equipped with cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure. As a result, they have considerably low scalability. To counter this problem, both government and NGO institutes have started providing them with the necessary training and courses.

Microfinance is a boon to entrepreneurs at the bottom of the pyramid. However, generally, industrious but poor people realize, in a hard way, that it’s tricky and incredibly difficult, to escape from the bottom layer. They still have to pay substantially high-interest rates (to microfinance institutions) in comparison to other classes, who are qualified for conventional banking institutions. The poor also have few social contacts and support systems to assist them. They almost have no collateral security to bank upon. Also, it’s a fact that most of these entrepreneurs (aspiring poor) are not entrepreneurs by choice. They will gladly accept employment if they can make a good living. Entrepreneurship at the bottom of the pyramid is more often than not a compulsion for these persisting pioneers.

Design of Different Types of Bicycle Frames and Their Effect on Drag

QUESTION:

How does drag affect the different types of bicycles with respect to their frames?

Abstract

Bicycles, as well as most modes of transport, came into existence in order to ease the commutation of human society. Bicycles are still a necessity for poor people, especially those living in rural areas. Cycle riding is also now the uber-cool trend, especially in developed countries. Cycling (especially racing) is a popular game all over the world. It has its place in the Olympic games. The most popular cycling race on the planet is- Tour De France.

People have been trying to lessen the effect of drag while racing since the time the bicycle was first invented. They could hardly imagine that something which was not visible but can only be felt was the major barrier. The people having a vested interest in racing started looking at the problem of drag seriously. They started coming up with different types of frames to reduce drag. I plan to look at the ways drag affects different types of bicycles with respect to the frames.

The aim of this essay is to figure out the effect of drag on the different types of bicycles with respect to their frames. My investigation started with consulting multiple resources relevant to bicycle racing. To serve my purpose, I have emailed multiple companies, engineers, designers, and racing teams. After collecting enough material, I started comparing the answers and the results. I also set a couple of tests to observe the theories first hand.

Introduction

Irrespective of the fact that human beings have invented numerous vehicles, the bicycle though only human-powered remains the most popular choice for the human race. The total number of bicycles on the planet is about 800 million, far exceeding any other vehicle. A cycle as though limited by human power is also the most energy-efficient. A cycle is not only used for commutation or racing but for fitness and touring as well.

Since the invention of bicycles with the ‘Running Machine’ in 1817, there has been a race going on to improve the security and speed of bicycles. Once, the cycles became relatively safe, the focus mostly shifted on how to improve the speed. The reason for this shift in focus is the innate competitiveness of human nature. Be it, kids, teenagers, or professional cycle racers everyone wishes to get ahead of the competition. The cycle makers do take part in this obsession and further fuel it by introducing new models, relevant advertisements, and the latest technologies.

Drag is the greatest barrier faced by every cyclist. Drag is the resistance offered by air/wind that a cyclist has to overcome in order to move forward. The drag accounts for 70 to 90% of the total resisting force a cyclist has to come to terms with. The velocity of a cyclist propelling the cycle forward would always have the limitation of human power. Thus, the aim is always to reduce drag.

As competitive cycle racing started getting popular, the cycling engineers/manufacturers and even individual racers started pondering how to reduce the drag in order to increase efficiency and speed. As expected most of the innovations came from the people/firms participating in the cycle races. In order to reduce the drag, the innovators realized that they need to make major improvements in bicycle frames. The technology and materials used in the manufacture of the latest cycles have taken enormous leaps. As we discuss the topic, professional designers, engineers, cyclists, and visionaries keep on trying to find the best/optimum ways to design bicycle frames.

Terminology-

Find below the explanation of some important terms which are a requisite for this essay-

  1. Drag- Drag is the total resistance a cyclist faces when he tries to pedal forward. Please find below the diagram demonstrating the drag-

  1. Friction- Friction is the resistance a surface provides to the other substance/object when the latter tries to move on it.

  2. Aerodynamics- Aerodynamics is the study of the movement/motion of air around a solid body.

  3. Pneumatic tires- Air-filled rubber tires.

Investigation-

I decided to investigate the following-

  1. Manufacturing

  2. Type of cycles available

  3. Cycle racing

Manufacturing

Cycles when they were first manufactured, were made up entirely of wood. No need to say that those cycles were not very practical for the regular use of common folks. Drag was certainly not a major factor as in order to move forward, one has to push the ground using one’s feet. The paddles were missing in this cycle. The rider could mount the cycle only when he is moving downhill. That’s the only time he can feel the drag working against his momentum.

The ‘Velocipede’ was the first cycle to contain the paddles. It was a highly risky prone cycle. It was also the first bicycle to be mass-produced. It, however, enabled the rider to paddle the cycle and experience the drag even on any type of ground. Still, the major issue with the Velocipede was certainly safety. No one was wondering about the drag a rider has to face while riding a velocipede.

The ‘Roadster’ which was the safest cycle till that date with pneumatic tires was the first bicycle to be used for races. The initial races were mainly for recreational purposes. The frames of these cycles were generally made up of steel. The most interesting part is that the diamond-shaped frames used for the first time on these bicycles are still used in most cycles including the latest racing cycles.

The frames of the latest racing bicycles are made up of carbon fibers and other exotic metals like Titanium, Aluminium, etc. The frames made up of carbon are far lighter and more aerodynamic. The aerodynamic carbon frames greatly reduce drag. Due to the significant weight reduction, the rolling friction reduces too. The latest carbon frames aid the cyclist to combat the resisting drag. It is thus imperative that the research to find the best/optimum designs for bicycle frames must go on.

The involvement of these new materials allows manufacturers to use aerodynamics to their maximum effect. They can now come up with unusual curves that were not even imaginable a few years ago in order to minimize the drag.

Types of Cycles with Unique Frames

There are multiple types of bicycles available as options for the modern rider. Let us consider the effect of drag on each, one by one-

  1. City Bicycles- Ironically though the model is called City Bicycle, nowadays it is mostly used in rural areas of India. These bicycles are mostly designed for comfort. The identifying feature of these bicycles is the raised handlebars. As it can be easily noticed that the frame over here in this type of model supports the upright body position while riding. I tried both the gents' and ladies' models. Due to the nearly straight backbone position of the rider, this position is quite comfortable. As I have tested myself the rider feels more in control of the cycle as the handle grips are relatively close to the body. Also, he/she can use the complete force of his legs while peddling. Sheer this type of riding position increases though increases the drag. The reason being the large surface area the rider’s body provides as resistance to wind. The chain cover which protects the chain from dust also increases the resistance. It is very hard to accelerate quickly in this cycle. The maintenance of the speed though is a bit easier in comparison. The materials which are generally used for these bicycles frames are steel and aluminum.

2) Road Bicycle- These bicycles are generally designed for proper concrete/cement roads. The structure of these cycles enables the rider to ride in the Obree position. The position, which was first introduced by Graeme Obree to break the world record. As I tried this cycle, I felt that though this position is quite uncomfortable it drastically reduces the surface area of the body exposed to the air/wind. This drag is thus considerably reduced in these types of cycles. The road cycles are generally recognized by their dropped handlebars. The dropped handlebars are actually quite helpful in the reduction of drag. The air friction which I felt was mainly into my face, head, shoulders, arms, and a bit on the back.

3) BMX Bicycle- This cycle is mostly used for stunts and off-road biking. As I mounted the cycle and pushed forwarded I felt a lot of drag. Probably I faced the maximum drag as I was paddling the cycle without sitting on the seat. Literally, my entire body was facing the drag.

4) Mountain Bicycle- These types of bicycles though are excellent on rough terrain they are the worst in terms of resistance. One is better off walking during windy weather than trying to run out of breath trying to peddle this cycle. I noticed that the handlebars were straight which provides the maximum surface area to the air pressure. I tried moving downhill and could easily feel the aerial force against my chest, arms, face, and abdomen. The thick tires also do resist more in comparison to other cycles. Even the thick shock absorbers on the frame offer maximum resistance due to their thickness.

5) Hybrid Bicycles- These cycles were designed to provide the best of the world features. These are essentially a mix of mountain cycles and road cycles. These cycles generally feature straight handlebars but come up with slick tires. The frames are also thicker in order to maintain sturdiness. I felt that the open-chested riding position increases the drag as well as the thick triangular stem. Most of the friction, I felt was on my face, chest, and arms.

6) Racing cycle (Pro)-  The latest racing cycle that we come across in major pro cycle races is nearly as aerodynamic as a modern airplane. These are tested in the same wind tunnels. As it can be noted from the picture below the biggest advantage of it is clearly the ‘Superman’ position it allows its riders to assume. This position is possible due to the raised seat and the handlebars protruding in front of the cycle. These cycles are made up of exotic materials like carbon, aluminum, titanium, etc. I was excited to try this cycle. Luckily, I came to know about a distant cousin, a cycling enthusiast who posses this expensive cycle. The cycle moved very smoothly especially on artificial turf. Due to the superman position, I have to be in, in order to ride the cycle, most of the drag I felt was on my back. The drag was far less in comparison to all the cycles.

Cycle Racing- It is important to discuss a bit about cycle racing as surely this is the most important and immediate reason that the need for improvement in cycles in order to combat the drag arose. The first recorded race was held in Parc de Saint-Cloud, Paris on May 31, 1868. James Moore of England won the 1200 meter race riding with a frame made up of wood and iron tires. Racing was so risky that the term ‘breakneck speed’ was coined to refer to the injuries the rider might have to bear in case he is moving at a high velocity.

Presently there are not only multiple types of tournaments but also multiple forms of competitions. These races range from road racing, track racing, cyclocross racing, BMX bicycle racing, and mountain bicycle racing, etc. Most of these competition does have different athletes and different form of bicycles competing in it.
